Stay safe
Safety guidance
Most adverts are genuine, but rental scams are common in Lagos. These habits keep your money safe.
Before you pay anything
- Never pay full rent before viewing.
- View in daylight and bring someone with you.
- Check which badges a listing has and what each one means.
- Keep messages on Shareroom until you've viewed.
- Get a written tenancy agreement showing every amount you agreed.
- Report anyone who asks for an inspection fee or money upfront.
How checks work
Each badge is a separate check. An advert can have some and not others, so look at which ones it has. Every advert is also read by our team before it goes live.
Identity checked
The advertiser proved who they are with an ID check. It's a check of the person, not the property.
Permission to let reviewed
Our team checked that the advertiser is allowed to let or sublet the place.
Property inspected
Someone visited the property in person and confirmed it matches the advert.
A check tells you what we confirmed, not that a deal is safe. Always view in person before paying.
Warning signs
- An inspection fee, or any money just to see the room
- A deposit to “hold” the room before you've viewed it
- Pressure to decide today because “many people are interested”
- Moving the chat to WhatsApp or a phone call before you've met
- Costs that weren't in the advert appearing after you say yes
- Rent far below other rooms in the same area
Agents and LASRERA
The Lagos State Real Estate Regulatory Authority (LASRERA) regulates estate agents and other real estate practitioners in Lagos State.
If an agent is handling a Lagos property, ask for their LASRERA registration details before paying any agency fee. You can raise concerns about an agent with LASRERA directly.
Report an advert or a person
On any advert, choose Report and tell us what's wrong. Our team reviews every report, and we can take an advert down while we look into it.
Report anyone who asks for money before a viewing, harasses you, or turns you away because of who you are.
If you've lost money or feel unsafe, contact the police as well. Reporting to us doesn't replace that.
